Weingut Erwin Sabathi

The tradition of growing wine exists within the Sabathi family already since 1650 in the wine region of Styria in Austria. The ground innovation and significant upturn were in 1992 – Erwin Sabathi (10th generation) took over the then existing establishment. On this base he founded his own winery and the famous brand name “ Erwin Sabathi ”. As building owner of his new wine cellar he was awarded with the “ Victor Geramb –medal for terrific constructions in Styria. The winery has been owned and managed by the winemaking couple Erwin and his wife Patrizia Sabathi, for years and is extremely successful. Patrizia took over all press-marketing, concept, development and design issues her love is interior design what helped the look from the winery today. The development of their wines is affected by the natural process.

All grapes are harvested by hand, all vineyards are cultivated according to organic guidelines, all wines are exclusively fermented with natural yeast. Sabathis has a cultivated area of 51 hectares with mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Their Sauvignon Blanc wines are among the best in the world.

Categorization
The Single Vineyard Poharnig is exclusively planted with the grape variety Sauvignon Blanc. Our Sauvignon Blanc wines from Poharnig, classified as “Erste STK Ried” (Premier Cru STK), are perfect to enjoy right from the beginning, but they have also a high ageing potential. The harvest yield is limited to a maximum of 45 hectolitres. Premier Cru STK wines are allowed to be offered for sale at the earliest on the 1st of September after 11 months of maturation.

Climate
Due to the tension between hot days and cool nights in combination with soft winds arriving from the Koralpe Mountains, only Sauvignon Blanc vines grow on this single vineyard site. Due to the sandy soil. this wine is characterized by a very salty substance.

Soil
The geological subsoil consists of fine-grained sands and conglomerate interstratifications. These conglomerate interstratifications are weathered in different degrees. On the upper slope areas, the size of grains and the water permeability increases.

Wine Description
Notes of flintstone characterized by the soil; cool and accurate fruit aromas, fresh alpine flowers, blackcurrant leaves; graceful with a vibrating acid; cool and salty minerality on the palate; delicate juiciness in the finish

Food Recommendation
Asian appetizers, mushroom dishes, white and green asparagus, pasta, chicken, quail, veal, beef, freshwater fish, fish in salt crust (zander, sea bass), shellfish, mussels, sushi.

Categorization
Our “Südsteiermark Sauvignon Blanc” signifies a very fresh and fruity wine. The vines of this wine flourish in numerous small vineyards in Southern Styria. This wine is allowed to be offered for sale at the earliest on the 1st of March after the grape harvest.

Wine-Growing Area
Southern Styria, from vines exclusively grown in Leutschach a.d.W. and Gamlitz.

Climate
A warm and humid Mediterranean climate causes a long vegetation period. Cool nights effect unique varieties of aromas.

Soil
The soil structure is characterized by firm sediment layers, deposited in this sea basin million years ago. The soil consists of fine marine sediments (geologically described as “Schlier”), as well as of different kinds of sand, conglomerate and gravel.

Wine Description
Aromas of yellow and red bell peppers, followed by hints of strawberries; delicious juiciness and feelable minerality; balanced flavour and great harmony in the aftertaste.
