Weingut Jurtschitsch

The Jurtschitsch winery, situated in Langenlois, is one of the most prestigious wineries in Austria which impeccably displays Austrian wine culture at its best.

Alwin and Stefanie Jurtschitsch having been leading the family estate for some time now and have managed to reinterpret premium wine in their own way. For the two of them this means vinifying authentic, complex and terroir-specific wines with cool, elegant stylistics – in other words, permitting the different appellations in Langenlois to express themselves individually. The new parameters, which are in fact based on long-standing traditions form the origin for this: biological farming, healthy soils, minimal interventions in the cellar and specifically experimenting to keep on top of the endless riches hidden away in the wine world.

Before taking over the winery, Alwin and Stefanie travelled the wine world and came to the conclusion that the conversion to organic farming was essential. It is not only an ethical principle to work sustainably, but also that quality can only be achieved through healthy soils and vines, an example being the use of cow dung as fertilizer. Additionally, breaking up the monoculture wine gardens by the planting peach trees and vineyard garlic. The long-term goal is to avoid irrigation by making the vines as healthy and as autonomous as possible. As healthy vines are not only more resistant, they also produce more intense wines.

In the cellar, the commandment is minimal intervention. The wines undergo spontaneous fermentation and are sulphurized only before bottling with moderate dosage.

To guarantee wine culture at the highest level, another commandment is: reduce to grow. Thus why leased vineyards were returned to ensure full commitment to the 62 hectares of privately owned vineyards.

The interplay of conditions in the vineyard, the thoughtful and respectful handling of nature, the sensitive and gentle vinification and an open mind for “new” ways is the successful recipe for producing wines of the highest standard for Alwin and Stefanie Jurtschitsch.

Grüner Veltliner Löss

2019

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 12.5%

Spicy, pineapple, round and juicy – even in the nose. This wine remains exotic on the palate and is accompanied by salty components (blame the loess) and a bit of pepper (blame the legend). Balanced, compact, and smooth. Framed by refreshing, lively acidity that is subtly buffered by a soft, round body.

Background
Grüner Veltliner “Löss” expresses its loess soils. Loess is principally sediment that is primarily comprised of silicate minerals like quartz, feldspar and mica and often limestone as well. The Spiegel is a southeast-facing site above Langenlois that is based primarily on loess and most of the grapes for the “Löss” are sourced from there. The reminder comes from Kremsfeld and because both vineyards are among the warmer sites, this is also correspondingly manifested in the wine. The most was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 18 °C and left to rest on the fine lees before beeing bottled.

Ried Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner

2019

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 13%

In our vineyards in the south-eastern part of the Langenloiser Loiserberg, Veltliner-vines are rooted deeply in mica slate interspersed with loess. Hand-picked grapes were carefully transformed into wine and matured in our 700-year-old natural cellar in large wooden barrels. The very steep and meager terraces of the Loiserberg vineyard provide the best conditions for an ideal Grüner Veltliner with a distinct character, deep fruitiness and an elegant style.

Ried Loiserberg
The vineyard is situated on the south-south-east side, laid out in terraces, reaches up to 380 m above sea level and is one of our highest sites. The vines are deeply rooted in crystalline mica slate. The Loiserberg is the most westerly elevation in Langenlois towards the Waldviertel region and thus enjoys a very special microclimate. Even on warm summer days, the vines are influenced by cooler winds from the rougher Waldviertel, which gives the wines a ripe acid structure, cool elegance and lightness.

Ried Heiligenstein Riesling

2019

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 13%

In our terraces on the Zöbinger Heiligenstein, Riesling vines are rooted in 270 year old Zöbing Perm rock, a unique geological formation of volcanic origin. Grapes harvested by hand have been transformed into wine with great care and aged in our 700-year-old natural cellar in large wooden barrels. The vines planted on meager terraces, produce a Riesling of a very special style. It reflects the unique terroir with exciting minerality and complex density. On the nose as well as on the palate this Riesling unfolds with precise fruit and mineral structure. A wine with great character and ageing potential.

Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein
With its very rare geological formation, Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein is one of the best Riesling sites in the winegrowing region. The Zöbing Perm is a meager, reddish and weathered desert sandstone with conglomerates of volcanic components from the Permian period (270 million years old). The vineyards are located in a nature protection area. Between the vineyards there are preserved dry grassland areas with rare flora and fauna.

GrüVe

2020

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 11.5%

Art and wine have once more come together and enter into their thirty-fourth edition. The dynamic label-image of Christian Ludwig Attersee with the title “GrüVe-Artistin” (GrüVe artist) refers to the feisty and vivacious character which is typical to our buoyant Grüner Veltliner. The standards are high: moderate yields, manual harvesting and a diligent vinification ensure an energetic, inciting, fruity and refreshing wine which goes well as aperitif and together with the classics of Austrian cuisine.

The making of the wine
The grapes were selectively picked by hand mid of September, carefully destemmed, and pressed at very low pressure. Without the use of pumps, the clarified must flowed from the press house into the natural cellar below and was slowly fermented. The delicate fragrances and flavors were thereby retained. The freshness and fruit of the classic Veltliner are emphasized by maturation in steel tank.

Drinking & food pairing recommendations
GrüVe is a brilliant aperitive, a delicious refreshment on hot days, as well as a hearty accompaniment to fresh, healthy dishes.

Grüner Veltliner Terrassen

2019

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 12.5%

Yellow with green undertones, fresh apple aroma with delicate citrus notes in the nose, a pleasant peppery spice with stimulating fruit on the tongue. A perfect drinking experience for many occasions.

Making of the wine
The grapes are picked by hand and brought to the press house in perfect condition in stackable crates, destemmed, and pressed with light pressure. The clarified must flows from the four-storey press house into the natural cellar without the use of pumps, and is slowly fermented in cooled stainless steel tanks at approx. 18 °C, first and foremost to convey the delicate aromas and flavours. The fine fruit is highlighted through aging in a steel tank.

Recommendation
Goes well with starters, poultry, salads and white meats – whether grilled, roasted, or breaded and fried. Also accompanies vegetable dishes and stews very well.

Riesling Platin

2019

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 12.5%

“Platinum” is the English translation for the name of this wine. Seldom has there been an entry level Riesling that deserves such an aristocratic title as the Riesling Platin: supple is the structure, cool the style, and elegantly layered the aromas. The nose and the palate exhibit vibrant notes of ripe apricot, delightful herbal spice, and lemon verbena. The Platin is bone dry with a crisp and refreshing spine of acid perfectly integrated in the expressive aroma structure. This wine inspires appetite for a second glass…

Backgroud
The Platin is a true Langenlois native: the grapes come from various terraced vineyards predominantly of primary rock that surround the little wine capital of the Kamptal appellation. Only ripe and fully healthy grapes are selected by hand and gently pressed. The must flows into stainless steel tanks in the natural underground cellar without the use of pumps. It is allowed to ferment slowly and become the brightly shining wine of finesse that it is.

Zweigelt

2017

PRODUCER: Weingut Jurtschitsch VOLUME: 750ml
COD: Austria ALCOHOL: 12.5%

The nose exhibits plenty of fresh fruit – pronounced cherry and red berries with nuances of blood orange that become increasingly noticeable on the palate. Abundant spice, particularly pepper, completes the spectrum of aromas and flavours. Refreshing acidity and robust tannin are bedded in a juicy texture making this a perfect bottle to unscrew for a barbecue.

Background
Honestly, Zweigelt is rather an “issue” in Austria. It grows everywhere, often in copious quantities, which leads to the unfortunate conclusion that it is universally well suited. If you really want to make superb Zweigelt, you’ve literally got your work “cut out”. The variety is vigorous and you’ve got to ensure that yields don’t explode. If meagre soils and cool expositions are chosen for this grape, the quality can be stunning. We strive to consider all of these components and allow enough time in the cellar for the wine to find its perfect balance in large casks and used wooden barrels.
