BERNHARD HUBER MALTERDINGEN

No other growing area in Germany is geographically as elongated as Baden. The vines thrive from the Franconian region of Baden to the Swiss border near Basel. The Burgundy varieties are particularly favorable in terms of climate. Top vintners and top gastronomy enter into a symbiosis that is unique in Germany. The prime location “Malterdinger Bienenberg” is in the foothills of the Black Forest between Freiburg and Offenburg.

Over 700 years ago, Cistercian monks brought Pinot Noir to Malterdingen. The monks’ estate, called “curia”, was located in the Mönchhofmatten district. The Huber winery is located there today. In Malterdingen, the monks encountered the same terroir, the “shell limestone weathered soil”, as in Burgundy. And they brought with them the high school of wine. In grape variety books and various wine encyclopedias, the terms “Pinot Noir” and “Malterdinger” are synonymous with Pinot Noir.
